Merlin wasn’t expecting Arthur to remember a lot, but the sheer magnitude of how much Arthur didn’t know shocked him. When Merlin first pulled him out the lake, Arthur couldn’t remember his manservant’s name, let alone anything else.

I know there’s no replacing what we’ve lost,” Merlin had said that day. “You need time.”

Time. How much time would it take really though? Days, months, years? After all the time Merlin had waited a few years seemed like nothing in comparison, but now that Arthur was here with him, as many as a few days seemed far too long.

“What happened on that last day Merlin?” Arthur asked yet again, pulling Merlin out of his thoughts.

“I couldn’t save you.” Merlin said simply.

Ahhh, I'm sorry. I didn't expect it to have any reaction, but thank you for reading it!

I think it's great! It expresses a lot of angst in a few words, and that's definitely something. :)

Thank you for reading it! And yeah, I didn't quite know how to word some (lots) of it, so I just settled for making it really short.

This is fab! Such a great take on the whole arthur coming back thing. Poor Merlin, he's waited all this time and he still doesn't have him

After all the time Merlin had waited a few years seemed like nothing in comparison, but now that Arthur was here with him, as many as a few days seemed far too long. I love this. There are so many conflicting emotions in this one line. They scrape against each other, and the balance of enjoying the time while it's happening and of looking forward to when they're both in posession of memories of all their time together is enough to drive Merlin a little mad: living in two opposing mentalities is a strain.

Thank you so so so much! I spent ages trying to figure out how to word that one line, so I'm so happy you picked up on it :)

Well thank you for writing it!

You know, the first half feels like what you're supposed to say when something happens that you don't really want but you have to live with it (like it's the philosophy you're meant to follow), and the second half is the impatient human half. It's a really great warring-with-himself line. So many facets.

Imagining Arthur being pulled from the water and seeing someone there yet not knowing them is heartbreaking. So much sadness.

Ah no, sadness was not the aim :( But thank you for reading it <3
