In their bed, Arthur pushes Merlin’s shift up to reveal the long curve of his back. He presses gentle kisses down Merlin’s spine, one for each jutting knob. When he gets to the base, Arthur tugs down the top of Merlin’s trousers and licks at that lovely dip of Merlin’s body where his back rounds into two swells. Merlin gasps into the pillow as Arthur’s teeth drag along his trouser line and pause at Merlin’s scar.

It’s an intricate pattern, three swirling snakes that emerge from a single source and curl back into each other in a cycle of ebb and flow. It would be beautiful if not for the redness that never faded, if Merlin’s skin hadn’t shriveled around the swollen lines when the mark had been burned into him by Uther’s guards in a mockery of the Druidic symbol. While Merlin tenses beneath him, Arthur kisses the scar, recalling with a shudder the sound of Merlin’s screams as the hot brand burned his skin.

“You can make the scar go away, you know. You can use your magic,” Arthur whispers, tracing a finger around the pattern.

Merlin twists around to look down at Arthur. “This is my memory. It can’t be magicked away,” he tells him.

Arthur remembers the endless night during which he had secreted the Druid leaders into the castle dungeon to help Merlin escape to their caves before Uther could execute Merlin at sunrise. He remembers the long years without Merlin that followed. In the curves of Merlin’s scar, Arthur finds the pathways he had travelled through the forests searching for Merlin after Uther had finally died. Arthur kisses the central point of the symbol, where the lines merge together, experiencing again their first night together when Arthur had returned Merlin to the castle and they had exchanged vows, their hands bound by coils of ribbon.

“It’s my memory, too,” Arthur says, climbing up Merlin’s thin body until he covers him completely. Arthur rests his head next to Merlin’s on the pillow and kisses the tip of his nose. “The scar reminds me that I failed you.”

“You did the best you could.” Merlin squeezes his shoulder.

Arthur shifts onto the bed next to Merlin and takes him into his arms. He slides his hand down until he feels the raised flesh of the scar under his fingers. “I cannot right this wrong,” he says. “But I can promise that no one will ever hurt you again.”

Arthur can see light from the morning sunrise begin to filter into their chamber, illuminating Merlin’s answering smile.
