It’s dark in the room. Dark, and quiet. Arthur breathes softly beside him, so deep in sleep that he barely snores at all. His chest rises and falls and Merlin feels it under his hand, the warmth of him, the rush of blood through his veins.

Merlin’s stethoscope hangs round his neck, and he shifts the earpieces up to hear, places the metal bell to Arthur’s heart and just listens. The steady beat, the slap of valves, in counterpoint to Arthur’s breathing. He sighs a little, content, drifting off in Arthur’s arms, just listening to the sound of him be.
