The trek from Ealdor had been hot and dusty and Merlin’s waterskin was empty hours before Camelot loomed on the horizon. His heart leaps at the thought of a cool drink so he quickens his stride, swiftly navigating between people and carts heading toward the citadel.
A crowd in the castle courtyard gives him pause and Merlin cranes his neck to see why they’ve gathered. The King’s pronouncement immediately followed by the arc of the executioner’s axe turns his blood to ice. When the dead man’s mother threatens retribution, Merlin wonders, heartsick, if revenge is the reason he is here.
