Title: Last Move
Rating: G
Pairing/s: Merlin/Arthur
Character/s: Merlin, Arthur
Summary: “Merlin. There’s no way you can win this”.
Warnings: -
Word Count: 157
Prompt: Prompt #4 - Surrender
Author's Notes:
i) I am aware chess wasn't really the game we know now until the late 15th century/very early Renaissance, but since Merlin is sooooo historically accurate anyway, I took liberties.
ii) I wasn't planning on this fic to be dialogue only. I first wrote the dialogue with every intentions to fill up the text afterwards, but somehow all my attempts at doing so fell flat and felt wrong. Even I know when to surrender (ha!) to the pesky gods of writing ;)
“You’re done for. You should surrender”.
“Nope. I still have a fighting chance”.
“Merlin. You only have your king and a pawn. There’s no way you can win this”.
“My King and a pawn is all I need, sire”.
“Oh, really? Pray tell, what will your pawn do against my knight, my bishop and, not to mention, my queen?”
“Everything, sire. My pawn will never let anything happen to my king. It will fight till the end.”
Pause.
“Till the end?”
“Yes, sire. Till the end.”
Silence.
“In this case. I surrender”.
“Sire?”
“My king bows down with humility before the bravery of your pawn. Besides, we wouldn’t want to separate the pawn from its king”
“No, we wouldn’t want that. The pawn wouldn’t let it happen, anyway.”
“I’m confident the king wouldn’t let it happen either.”
A heartbeat.
“Really?”
“Really.”
“Never?”
“Never.”
A smile.
“Good. My pawn is happy.”
“And believe me, so is your king.”
