Gaius knew that Merlin regarded him as a father and looked upon him as such, just like the boy knew that he treated him like the son he never had. Through thick and thin, Gaius and Merlin were as close as father and son could be without actually being so.

Before Merlin arrived in Camelot, the old physician wished for the one thing that he knew he could never have, the only thing that had been denied to him in his lifetime and that was to have a child of his own. He never knew just what it meant to be proud of a child's accomplishment and he became jealous of the parents he came across with young children.

However, for the first time in his entire life, Gaius felt something that he had thought he would never feel.

The pride of a father.
