Merlin was always the impossible boy. Eyes blue and free like the sky, richly dark hair, bone structure sculpted by gods. It was inevitable that Arthur would love him, caged as he was. Looking back, Arthur doesn’t know why it ever surprised him.

Now Merlin’s magic fails to shock him. Of course Merlin would be the one part of Camelot that doesn’t make sense; a warlock, forced to suppress his powers, saving Arthur time and again but never seeking credit. Of course Merlin was born into his power, a fate rarer than diamonds. Arthur sighs and loves him for it.
