“I’m thinking…chocolate,” Morgana declares, flipping through pages in a binder of bakers. “For the cake, you know.”
“Hmm,” Gwen hums in response. “You’re always thinking chocolate.”
“It’s not my fault they don’t know what they want,” Morgana says reasonably. “I’m just suggesting what I think would be good.”
“Not every couple wants a chocolate cake.”
“But you don’t know that this couple doesn’t.”
“You don’t know that they do.”
“Which is why I’m saying we should suggest it.”
“One of them could be allergic to chocolate, or could hate chocolate, or could—”
“I think they would have brought that up,” she cuts off Gwen’s oncoming tirade. “And if they forgot, no matter. We’ll think of something else. It’s just a suggestion.”
Gwen huffs. “What?” inquires Morgana.
“Nothing,” answers Gwen shortly.
Morgana resists the urge to roll her eyes. “Gwen, come on. What is it?”
“I just—” Gwen starts, then cuts herself off with a frustrated sigh. She tries again, “You always suggest the same thing. You always keep things the same. It’s like you’re scared of going beyond just…chocolate.”
“Uh…Well, I—I like chocolate,” Morgana says, never having thought this hard about her flavor preferences. “So. I don’t really see the need to change that.”
“But don’t you ever want to branch out?” Gwen urges her, placing a hand on Morgana’s forearm. “Explore other flavors?”
“What kinds of flavors?” Morgana asks dumbly. She’s reasonably sure they’re no longer talking about cake, but she can’t think of what else they could be discussing.
“Strawberry, rocky road, cookies and cream, mint chocolate chip, peach,” Gwen lists. “There are plenty of options. You just need to ask.”
Morgana’s eyes flick down to where Gwen’s hand still rests on Morgana’s forearm. Gwen doesn’t pull her hand away, keeping her gaze steady on Morgana’s face. Morgana looks back up and locks eyes with Gwen. Heart racing, she replies carefully, “Maybe I will. One day.”
Gwen sighs, like she had been expecting that answer but was still disappointed by it, and pulls her hand away. “Okay.” She turns back to her own binder, filled with flowers. Falsely, she says, “So, I was thinking daisies and bluebells may be a good mix for them?”
Morgana nods along, listening to Gwen explain her reasoning for the bouquet suggestion, ignoring the feeling that she’s missing something here.
