Arthur woke to find George putting the finishing touches on a sumptuous breakfast. “Oh hell no,” he said, throwing on the clothes left for him. He made his way to Gaius’s rooms, muttering about useless servants.
He entered without knocking, surprising Gaius, who stood hastily. “Sire, how can I help you?”
“Where is he?”
“Whom, sire?”
“Merlin! And don’t say ‘the tavern.’”
Gaius pointed to Merlin’s little room. “He’s in there.”
“Having a little lie-in, I see.” Arthur stomped over to the door and pushed it open.
“No, he’s actually sick,” Gaius said, following him over.
Arthur glanced into the room at Merlin, who up until then, had been asleep. “Arthur?” he asked.
“Oh,” Arthur said. “You really are ill.” He turned to Gaius. “What is he sick with?”
“A bad cold. Sire, he really needs his rest.”
“Aww, you came to check on me,” Merlin said, grinning.
“I just wanted to make sure you weren’t at the tavern again.”
Merlin rolled his eyes. “I’m almost never at the tavern.”
“Be that as it may, I expect you to get over this quickly.”
Merlin grinned again. “They gave you George again, didn’t they?”
Arthur deflated. “Yes. Please just get well soon, all right?”
“I’ll try, but I need my rest?”
“Oh of course.” Arthur closed the door and stepped away from it. “Sorry to disturb you, Gaius.”
“Not to worry, Sire. And do not worry about Merlin. I am taking good care of him.”
“Thank you, Gaius. Enjoy the rest of your day.”
“Of course.” Gaius bowed and Arthur left the room.
It looked like he was stuck with George for the time being.
