Morgana appeared on their doorstep one stormy afternoon, Gorlois’ land manager’s gloved hand on one damp shoulder. Arthur warily watched the new intruder. Her parents are dead, Uther explained, she needs us to be her family now.

The stiff backed, white faced girl didn’t look like she needed anyone at all. She’s ours, Arthur, make her feel welcome, his father urged.

Welcome like a rash Arthur muttered. Morgana narrowed her eyes.

At supper Morgana stabbed him in the thigh with a hair pin then grinned like a she devil at his yelp. Arthur elbowed her wine over. Ice broken.
