Arthur drifts in and out of consciousness for days or months or years until there is an insistent tugging into wakefulness and a whispering all around him (or only in his head), ”It’s time. It’s time. It’s time.”

Tugging becomes tearing, pushing his waking body through a twilight landscape his eyes refuse to open to.

Then Arthur is falling but somehow rising, too, through a clear blue sky, under a grey green lake. Suddenly somebody is above him, distorted by water and then not as shaking hands pull Arthur up, gasping, into Merlin’s crushing, tearful embrace.

He’s finally home again.
