He rested his knuckles against her door. The fire of the winter hearth inside warmed the wood, while the frosted air of the citadel chilled his back. Last time, she'd hurried off to prepare Morgana for the embassy; a month ago disaster in the scullery beckoned, then in the gardens, hair dark against the violet of her dress, she'd told of the physician's urgent need of angelica and thyme. Once, they'd kissed so deeply he still tasted her on his lips. In between had come the flash of gold, the fine cut of red cloth, a curious glance. He knocked.
