A competent servant is expected to walk two steps behind but Merlin has never thought of himself as much of a servant and Arthur wholeheartedly agrees.

“If I’m behind you, eyes down, all I’ll see is your wide arse. By your side I can watch for danger and still have your back.” Arthur cuffs Merlin across the back of his head but he’s smiling despite himself.

With Merlin's insistence, this is a pattern that plays out over years, until one fated day Merlin isn’t at his King’s side. Their paths diverge.

Merlin has waited centuries for them to cross again.
