In retrospect Arthur should have seen this coming. He realizes he shouldn’t have bullied dead on his feet Merlin into going to Morgana’s New Year’s Open House after pulling a double in the ER the second his bleary eyed boyfriend takes the champagne flute from his hand and chugs it straight down.

Engagement ring and all.

Half an hour later they’re tucked up in bed, Arthur apologizing yet again for the stupid romantic gesture.

Merlin gives him a sleepy smile and a kiss. “You should have expected I'd do something like this but you’re marrying me anyway.”

Arthur smiles back, hopeful. “So that’s a yes?”

“When we get the ring back, we’ll give it a good scrub and you can try this again. No spoilers,” Merlin says, turning off his light. “Don’t do anything daft like tying it to a dove, though. I’d really like to get that ring on my finger one day.”

Arthur grins and shuts off his light before pulling his pliant, sleepy almost fiancé in for a cuddle. “Happy New Year, Merlin.”

“Happy New Year, Arthur,” Merlin mumbles into his pillow.
