Merlin counted himself lucky as he lay in bed that night. Uther’s apparition had disappeared as he had been saying “Merlin’s got magic.” Somehow Arthur had completely ignored what his father had to say, and Merlin was grateful. He’s almost been exposed, by Uther of all people, er, ghosts.

He wondered if Arthur would remember and ask him about it later. If Merlin was very lucky, Arthur would discount what Uther had said as the rumblings of an angry ghost bent on ending his rule. He’d seen those tears in Arthur’s eyes as he’d sounded the horn. Indeed, Arthur had dismissed him and Gaius Quietly from his chambers as soon as they’d reported what had happened. It couldn’t be easy for the king to see his father’s true nature like this. Merlin vowed to help Arthur through the grief as well as he could.
