“Merlin, breakfast is ready,” Gaius called.

“I’ll be there in a minute,” Merlin yelled back through his door.

Gaius sat at the table to wait for Merlin. He wondered what the young man had planned for his day. He hardly seemed to be home these days, between his manservant duties and his magical ones. And, of course, the weight of his destiny eclipsed all of that.

A minute or so later, Merlin entered the main chamber and sat at the table across from Gaius. “I don’t have long. Arthur wanted me earlier today, which means yesterday.”

“Ah, I’ve forgotten what it’s like to feel young. You and Arthur, out there adventuring. It make me long for my youth again.”

Merlin put a hand over Gaius’s. “Gaius, you’re barely old. Besides, you get out there ‘adventuring’ often enough anyway.”

“True enough. Now eat, Merlin. No doubt Arthur will have you working past sundown again.”

“Yes, Gaius.” He grinned, and they both dug into their gruel.
