Title: An End for A Beginning
Rating: PG
Pairing/s: past Arthur/Merlin
Character/s: Merlin, Hunith
Summary: Everything must come to an end.
Warnings: Maybe a bit of angst
Word Count: 170
Prompt: #301: Heartbreak
Author's Notes: ---
Merlin stared down at the papers in front of him for what must have been the hundreeth time, and still he could wrap up his head around it. He was doing this. They were going through with it.
His stomach lurched, twisting painfully, his hand shook as he jotted down the last signature and then it was over. Quick and painful. The pen rolled down from the table and hit the floor.
Merlin swallowed around the know in his throat, said, "So that was it then."
Hunith placed her hand above his, she was warm and comforting, Merlin tried to smile at his mum, but couldn't. Not yet. It was too soon.
"My love," she said, softly, "Just because it's over it doesn't mean the love wasn't real. Cherish every moment you had together."
Merlin nodded, he knew she was right even when he couldn't see beyond the emptiness he felt. He had loved Arthur, he still did. Sometimes it wasn't enough he'd come to find.
"Yeah...Here's to new beginings."
