Title:Blatant Thievery
Rating:PG-13
Pairing/s:Arthur/Merlin
Summary:Merlin is bored with the repeated attempts to steal Arthur's hair, until one night lifetimes later someone doesn't want Arthur's hair at all.
Warnings:reincarnation fic.
Prompt:Gold
It wasn't so much the length of his hair but the color of it that caused all the problems. The fey wanted it for glamours. Elves and druids needed it for rituals, Pixies desired to spin real gold, witches for love and strength spells, hell even a troll was going to make herself a wig from it.
For 6 lifetimes Merlin's duty to defend against all their blatant thievery in the night grew more of a tiresome challenge than he expected. Bored silly of all the fruitless attempts, he had used an enchanted shower cap for the last 15 years of their most recent life.
And now he stood over his sleeping husband about to throw what felt like a new witch out of their home with the flick of his wrist.
Then he hears her hurried request. "I don't want his hair. I want yours."
Merlin had never heard that before. At least not from anyone who wasn't trying to do him bodily harm. There were lots of spells that could be done with hair as a component if damage to the follicle donator was the goal. He mentally tightened his hold on the witch he had magically pinned to his bedroom wall.
"Why do you need that? Most come for the Once and Future King's hair. Most grimoire even made note of the effects and value of the rare item.
"It's for a magic revealing spell. You hid your magic from him during multiple lifetimes according to the books and my mother told me that if I was to ever find you in my time I could use your hair to find others that were hiding."
Arthur finally stirred in the bed at the noise. and merlin moved both himself and the witch against the wall out of the bedroom to complete their conversation. While he was gone he made sure the standard wards were up to prevent others just in case this girl was a distraction.
"Ok explain yourself. Why do you need to find other magic users that don't wish to be found?"
"One is my brother. The other is my father. one is my Mother."
"Crap." Merlin already recognized the stoic tilt of head and the heavy lost gaze in her eyes. Each life meant different circumstances but often the same people. Most didn't remember all of them. That burden fell to only he and Arthur.
Merlin looked over the witch wondering how much she knew. "Try again to tell me what you want."
"To find my place in this lifetime."
And with that Merlin understood that this person knew almost all of it and understood where the raven haired brother and golden haired father were. "hello Mordred." Merlin greeted her with a slight bow and tightening his magical grip so it included her throat.
"It's true that I can't find my mother and that in our last lifetime she told me your hair would help find her."
"I'll send you to her, on the condition you don't come back for at least twenty-five years. I like this life and will be very upset if I have to start over again."
"Deal. I have no need to wander around for months searching and I like this life. I have children of my own again."
Morgana's business card flew from Arthur's desk in the corner and planted itself on Mordred's forehead. "She's in Florida, near Miami. "
"Thank you brother." Mordred replied while Merlin loosened his hold and opened the door with more flashes of gold in his eyes.

I always thought Mordred would make a very interesting lead character. His motivations and side of things would be intriguing to follow.

Date: 2012-08-11 08:54 pm (UTC)In this life Mordred is female and has kids. I honestly thought about with whom he might have children. The results of that pondering were kind of scary and might end up in a future drabble. For now I leave it totally up to your imagination.
