The tiny creature sat in the middle of their path, all fluffy red-golden fur and huge shimmering eyes.

Merlin couldn't resist. Dismounting, he squatted and reached out, his voice gentle. "Look at you, strange little one, alone in the world. Are you lost?"

Arthur cautiously scanned their surroundings. "I've never seen something like this. Is it of a magical nature?"

"Maybe," Merlin conceded. "But it's so cute!"

As if agreeing with him, the adorable little being emitted a pleading noise.

"Looks deceive. It might be dangerous. Let's be on our way." Nudging his horse, Arthur trotted onwards up the path. "Come on."

Merlin lingered for a moment, daring to pet the baby animal's soft fur. "I'm sorry, sweetie. If you're still here when we return, perhaps I can take you home with me."

Just then, the afternoon's quiet was shattered by a shout and a wild and deafening roar from up ahead. Merlin got to his feet in alarm.

Arthur came hurtling back round the bend. Racing down the trail, he gave his panicked horse free rein.

"Ride, you idiot! Ride!" Arthur yelled as he thundered past Merlin. "I just met that thing's mother, and she's neither small nor cute!"
