Merlin couldn’t understand the allure of so-called comic books, until he discovered one titled Batman. He was even called The Dark Knight! That piqued his interest, so he read it. The man was indeed a dark knight, searching for truth and justice his own way instead of the way of the established order. He intrigued Merlin in ways he couldn’t describe.
When the television show started, he watched to see how the producers would depict Batman. To his disappointment, it wasn’t dark at all, but bright and loud. It was what the 1960’s demanded but maybe not what they needed.
He had to wait several years before the first movie unrelated to the television show entered the scene. It was interesting, but still not quite what he’d expected from the comics. Sequels only grew more watered down and campy, so when a reboot series of movies was announced, he didn’t have a lot of hope. But he was wrong.
People on the street and coworkers talked about the new movie so much, he finally decided to break down and see it. He was not disappointed. It was everything Batman was meant to be—not just a retelling of the origin story.
The sequels were amazing. He didn’t even mind the end, which others found sad or even lame. It felt complete to him. Batman had finally had some justice of his own.
