The Round Table

Arthur was excited. At last, it was ready. It had taken many weeks, he had employed the most skilled of wood-workers to create it. All built to his design, well, Merlin’s design really, but he had told Merlin what to do. It was all his idea too, well Merlin had reminded him of the round table of the old Kings. He had suggested it when Arthur was looking for some way to show that all the knights were of equal standing, noble birth or not. It would stop the bickering amongst the knights, and at the same time it would say to all that Guinevere also had a place at court, former servant or not, she was now his wife and co-regent. On top of all of that, it showed the people that he was a different ruler than his father, he was King of a realm that would treat everybody as equal, a wedding gift to his Queen, and his legacy to Camelot, it was perfect.

He couldn’t wait to make the announcement. He only hoped that Merlin would not try to take credit for any of it.

I really like how Arthur dismissively acknowledges Merlin's teeny tiny role (Arthur certainly would have thought of this himself given a moment's rest from the arduous task of being King) in Arthur's totally brilliant Round Table. Merlin had nothing to do with it. Well, very, very little. Hee!
