Author's Notes: Some of the dialogue is taken from episode 1.06 A remedy to cure all ills.
edit: I also got the idea for light/dark when I read that Ambrosius (Merlin's other name in legends) means Prince of LIght
Waiting
The first time Gaius went and saw the Great Dragon was the day after he and the Dragonlord had been captured. He made his way down to the very depths of the castle, where he found the cavern in which the dragon had been chained, unable to break free. The beast was standing as if waiting for him.
“Balinor is freed”he told the dragon. “He’s heading out of this Kingdom to some place where hopefully he will be safe.
“I know” the Great Dragon stared stonily down at him.
Gaius continued “I cannot help you as well, I’m afraid”
He felt the Dragon glaring at him
“Cannot or will not, it is your choice physician”he growled
Gaius faltered, he knew that dragon’s had the gift of foresight and prophesy, he needed to ask
“What will happen now? To Camelot and those with magic? Is it all over now?”
“It has barely begun physician”The dragon lowered his head “These lands will be surrounded in darkness for many years, and you will continue to be too frightened to stand up and do anything”
“What will you do?”Giaus asked
“I, like many others will be waiting for the light, for hear this physician, that day is coming”
And with that the dragon flew away.
A few years later he was obliged to go and talk to the Dragon again. It was midwinter and Camelot had been stricken by an almighty quaking of the earth. The castle had shook and the windows had exploded.
Again, Gaius made his way down into the bowels of the castle and called out to the Dragon.
“The King has sent me to ask if this quake was your doing”he said when the Dragon appeared before him.
The Dragon laughed, the sound echoing around the walls of the cavern. “Physician, have you come so far in such a short amount of time that you have lost your ability to feel the magic around you anymore? This was not of my doing, but yes, it is the result of magic.”
“Who was it then?”
“The light” the Dragon responded.
“How do you mean, how can light cause the earth to quake?”
“Not a light, THE light, the quake you felt is the moment which the light has been borne into the world, the one called Emrys who will come and led us out of the darkness and together with the young Pendragon unite the lands as Albion, our waiting is nearly over”
With that, the Dragon flew of, leaving Gaius alone.
The third time Gaius went and saw the dragon was many years later. His visit was prompted by the appearance of a young healer who had found Merlin had magic and wanted to teach him. But this young man had only treacherous intentions. He was worried about his charge and the magic he held within him. The only one who could answer his question was the dragon.
He relunctantly made his way down to the caverns again, feeling the weight of his years. On calling out the dragon appeared as he had done so before. Upon gazing at him the Dragon remarked “How old man can become but change so little”
“You have not changed either”he told the dragon
“Twenty years, almost a lifetime to make the short journey back to where you began”
“I’m not here for myself”Gaius stated
“The Boy?’the Dragon asked
“You know about Merlin?”
He shouldn’t have been surprised.
“You have struggled against his destiny, but you can no more prevent it, then he can”
“So it is true then?
“Oh yes, he and the young Pendragon will one day unite the land of Albion”
And so he had his answer, this extraordinary boy who had been sent to him and saved his life, who claimed he had been born with magic was the light they had all been waiting for.
As he started to take his leave, he turned and asked, “And you, are you still waiting to be freed?”
“I will be freed soon enough, you know as well as I who his father is”
“ And what will you do when that day comes? He asked
The Dragon did not answer, and flew away instead, leaving him alone to ponder what the dragon had told him, and the decision he must make, to help or turn a blind eye?”
