He had fallen to his knees and begged to be beheaded, not burned.
So they built a pyre.
He had pleaded, repeating that he was not evil. There had not been much of a trial. At least this way he got to address the people, in a fashion.
He would walk away soon. But for now he let his head lull down, letting them think the smoke had claimed him. He peeked through the flames at the faces he knew, reading them in this new light. The roaring flames caressed their kindred spirit. Fire would never kill a dragon lord.
