Character/s: Merlin
Warnings: Violence
Word Count: 100
Prompt: 128, Illusion
Merlin is sweet natured, kind hearted, clumsy and soft. It’s not a lie but there is a seldom seen dark depth to him. Those that experience it don’t survive long enough to share his secrets. Corpses don’t tell tales.
He shows Camelot and its King what they need to see but death and destruction are at his core, warring with a softer spirit that is hardening with each new battle.
Merlin isn’t sure where he’s headed but it’s sure to be a future filled with violence and death, one he will meet with Arthur, angry magic crackling, waiting to strike.

I was watching To Kill the King with my kids the other day, and it struck me how Gwen changed Merlin's mind about allowing Uther to die. It bugged me that our sweet Merlin was torn about what to do, where Gwen didn't even have to think about it. But then I thought about how much death and evil Merlin had already been exposed to and how it must have numbed him to the violence, but Gwen hadn't been aware of most of that, so she was still able to be more compassionate. So this line of yours about his soft spirit hardening really gutted me.
Anyway... this drabble is heartbreaking and perfect at the same time. So so well done.
