Author's Notes: Here, have another look at Merlin's depressing life.

Once upon a time the magic manifested as butterflies for crying toddlers, a shiny coin plucked from an urchin’s ear, flowers for a jilted maiden. “Tricks” meant to brighten a rough morning, a bleak life. Small gifts to balance out the other, often violent bursts of magic used to save lives, to rescue friends, to help ensure a precarious destiny.

These kindnesses are dismissed in dreams, supplanted by dragon fire and smoking battlefields, Merlin’s blood covered hands, Arthur dead at his feet. His subconscious unspools which acts are his legacy and which have been forgotten as the centuries crawled by.
