Letting Go

It had been a sad morning for Hunith when she said goodbye to her son. There had been no choice, his magic was bound to be noticed soon. He just couldn’t keep it under control. Her old friend Gaius was their only hope. Yet the idea of sending her boy off to King Uther’s court, knowing what happened to sorcerers there, filled her with fear.

“Be careful,” she urged him.

Merlin just smiled at her, bright and loving. She could hardly bear to let him go. But she knew that she must.

She stood at the window, watching, until he was out of sight. And even then she watched, imagining she could still see him.

---

Correspondence between Camelot and Essetir was slow and sporadic. It was several weeks before Hunith received a letter bearing the seal of the court physician, though she recognised her son’s immaculate hand.

Dearest Mother, it read.

I hope you are well. I have settled at Camelot and am going to stay with Gaius. We have much in common, as you thought. Camelot is huge and so different from Ealdor. Most of the people are kind and interesting. You will love my new friend Gwen, I hope you get to meet her one day.

All is not completely well though. Mother, I have met the prince of all prats, and I hope you never have the misfortune to meet him...

Hunith settled down to read the letter properly. Her boy certainly had a lot to say.

Most of it was about Prince Arthur.

This might be the only fic I've read about Merlin leaving Ealdor for Camelot, which is hard to believe with all the Merlin fic out there! I could feel Hunith's sadness. Great job :-)

Wooot. Of course Merlin had a lot to say about the prat. He already finds him annoyingly irresistible :))

Of course Merlin would mostly talk about Arthur. :D It was great seeing Hunith's perspective on this, partly an outsider but also someone who knows Merlin better than anyone.

A mother's perspective- ya don't see that very often. I also love how most of the letter was about Arthur. Big surprise. ;)

What a melancholy parting but Merlin's letter certainly brightened the mood.

Poor Hunith. She must have missed him terribly.

I really love this point of view of the beginning of the story! And of course Merlin talks a lot about Arthur!
